How to Keep Construction Workers Warm & Safe During Winter

3 min

Construction sites don’t stop because the temperature drops. But working in cold weather can be hazardous if you don’t follow a few simple steps to stay warm and safe on-site. Using the correct PPE workwear and layering up against the cold can help can ensure your workers enjoy a safe and productive winter.

Safety first

If bad weather hits, you’ll need to do a full site inspection to clear any ice and snow or hazards like downed powerlines. Make sure to put sand or salt on icy patches and warn workers to slow down and take care in freezing conditions.

Call a meeting to ensure your team has the appropriate cold-weather gear and that they know the signs of cold weather stress. That way, they can carry out regular buddy checks to ensure no one is suffering.

Finally, provide emergency kits including battery packs, sleeping bags, water, energy bars and a shovel in your work vehicles so your teams can look after themselves until help arrives.

Provide the correct PPE workwear

When cold weather strikes, you need to ensure your workers have the proper PPE workwear.

Cover your head

It might be a myth that most of your body heat is lost through the head, but a warm knitted cap is essential in cold weather. In addition, hard hats protect against winter accidents caused by slippery conditions. Make sure your teams have fleece liners for their hard hats to provide additional warmth and safety.

Protect the hands and feet

Focus on the extremities — hands and feet are the first parts of the body to lose warmth, making even simple tasks difficult to perform.

Providing warm gloves helps to retain physical dexterity, while wool socks and insulating boots are a great way to keep cold feet toasty. Make sure boots are waterproof with non-slip soles for additional safety on a muddy or icy site.

If workers need to wear steel toe cap boots, provide extra thermal socks as the metal can act as a heat sink.

Focus on visibility

A final safety tip is to treat goggles, safety glasses and masks with anti-fog spray, so visibility isn’t compromised in wet or cold conditions.

Layer up

Keeping warm and dry is critical in cold weather. You should ensure that workers have enough layers to stay warm without compromising mobility and the flexibility to perform everyday tasks.

Start with at least three layers:

  • A base layer made of a moisture-wicking thermal fabric that feels dry and comfortable next to the skin.

  • A second layer constructed from a breathable and insulating material, such as a fleece.

  • A protective outer layer that’s wind and waterproof, made from hi-vis fabric for extra visibility in harsh conditions.

Ensure that all three layers fit well and allow for a full range of movement.

Stay warm and dry

Wet clothes can be a real problem when the temperature drops. If moisture stays on the skin, it can lower body temperature and put your workers at risk of hypothermia or cold weather shock.

All outer layers should be waterproof, and you should provide a change of socks, gloves, hard hat liners and other PPE workwear for workers to change into if they get wet. Providing a well-heated break area allows your teams to take a rest, grab a hot drink and change out of any damp gear.
